Shutter by Laurie Faria Stolarz

October - 2016

For a rather stereotypical story about a hot escapee who falls in love with a lawyer's daughter, this book was surprisingly well done. Most of the characters were well thought out and have decent reasons for doing what hey do. One of the cons of this book may be that there is very little actual character development. The ending was surprising and fun as well as leaving it wide open for a sequel. I recommend this book to any teen girls looking for a little candy in between the heavier books.

Sabotage by Neal Bascomb

Scholastic 2016

Sabotage by Neal Bascomb is a non-fiction book about the Norwagian's plan to sabotage Hitler's atomic bomb. Although it is a non fiction book, Neal Bascomb did an excellent job in making the book enticing enough to even catch the attention of fiction readers. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and also enjoyed the amount of facts it had.

Passenger by Alexandra Bracken

Erin, 13
Alexandra Bracken
Hyperion 2016

Danger. Betrayal. Romance. Drama. Time travelers. It's all here in Alexandra Bracken's novel Passenger, where music prodigy Etta Spencer loses everything she cares about, and is carted away to a different time. The time-traveling aspect of this book was very interesting, like how they managed to avoid all of the paradoxes.

Lost Stars by Lisa Selin Davis

Lost Stars
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 2016

I believe that this would have been a good book, if only I didn't hate the main character so much. It's hard to like a character when all they do is complain. And that's exactly what Carrie (the main character) did. After suffering a tragedy, she was feeling blue. But it never seemed to occur to her that other people had lives that were just as worse, or even more awful. Instead, she wallows in self-pity and makes other kids lives misreable because she torments them. I do think she became a bit more likeable in the end, but most of the book was hard to read. I did enjoy all of the lyrics and songs that were mentioned, because it was a nice surprise from what I usually read.

Holding smoke is an interesting book, but lacks a hook to bring anything out. The main character seems dull and under achieved and the overall plot seems gray. There isn't much about this book to enjoy. A great start to writing, but it needs more development in my opinion.

Holding Smoke was a decent book, with mystery, romance, and thrills. I found the ending a bit hard to understand, but the rest of the book was easy to read, and I found all of the characters diverse and entertaining.
