Fire in the Streets by Kekla Magoon

Kylie, 16
Kekla Magoon
Fire in the Streets
2012

"Fire in the Streets" is about a young girl named Maxie who grows up in the projects of Chicago in 1968. At 14, she is told numerous times that she isn't old enough to join the Black Panthers, a group working towards equal rights for blacks. When she finds out that someone has been turning information over to the police, or "pigs", she believes that if she can find the traitor, she might finally be asked to join. However, when she does find out who it is, her world is turned upside down.  The book started off relativly slow, and stayed that way for most of the book. Lot's of the story were about Maxie's work day down at the Black Panther office sealing envelopes or how her mom tries to find work after losing her job. Instead of talking about the person selling off the Panther's, it instead talks about Maxies life and trials, despite the fact that the traitor is a central plot point to the book.  The last few chapters definatly make up for it. Maybe a bit too well, in fact. The last 10 chapters seemed to rush by in a blur, leaving me breathless and going back to try and see what happened.  The characters were also rather one-dimensional. Maxie keeps going on and on about how much she wants to join the Black Panthers, and her friends Patrice and Emmalee seem thrown in there to add to the cast. Sam, Maxie's ex-boyfriend, also seems like the typical man in novel like this, mysterious and unreachable.  Overall, a good, quick, book, but not something I'd read twice.

Revived is a wonderful, almost sci-fi novel which stars Daisy, a teen, with a big secret. She is a test subject for "revive", a drug which can bring people back from the dead; it has been used on her five times. Each time she "dies" she must adopt a new identity and make a new life for herself. This novel is expertly written and is more and more exciting as each layer of the story is peeled back. I love the way Patrick conveys Daisy's unconventional life; Patrick has an excellent grasp of what high school is really like. Many authors struggle to make their description realistic, and I think she does a superb job. The book made me cry, laugh, and think deeply about my own life. If you read this book, you will not be disappointed!

Isaac's bar mitzvah is in three weeks, and his parents have gone on a trip to Italy, leaving Isaac's hot-headed older brother Josh in charge.  The situation might sound bad now, but it's made worse by the fact that Isaac is compleatly unprepared for his bar mitzvah, his tutor never showed up! This book was great.  A good comedy with just enough heartbreak to keep it real, Sons of the 613 had me hooked.  Though I almost left this book because the language was so bad, i deffinatly recomend waiting it out.  The ending was amazingly well written, so powerfull it made me cry.

First of all I would not recomend this book to any one with strong Chirstian beleifs for two reasons, one there is a lot of vulger in here and secondly, it is about a jewish family. If you can make it past that then you could read this book. I just have to tell you one thing do not read this if you do not like books that are slow to start and this book is all worth it in the last few pages.

My Sister Lives On The Mantelpiece by Annabel Pitcher

Elizabeth S., 15
Annabel Pitcher
My Sister Lives On The Mantelpiece
Little Brown  2012

My Sister Lives On The Mantelpiece was a unique novel about a boy whose older sister was killed in a terrorist attack. Even though it is five years later in the start of the novel, his family is still suffering greatly from that traumatic event. His father loathes anything or anyone that isn't British, and he drinks, though nobody likes to admit it. His mother left, and the twin of the sister who died - Jas- struggles to be her own person. The family moved in an attempt to get a fresh start, and in this new town Jamie made a new friend he knew his father wouldn't like - a young Muslim girl. Through the eyes of  ten year old Jamie, readers experience how difficult it is to let go. Overall, Pitcher's novel was very good, and a quick read. There were funny parts and sad parts, parts that confused me and parts I could relate to. The novel is unique as it explores coping with loss, dealing with change, and the troubles of being ten. I recommend this book because the narrator is interesting, the storyline is touching, and the characters are memorable. This book was good, but as for reading age I'm not entirely sure what it should be. The ten year old narrator gives it a childlike quality, but there are some deep aspects of the book younger readers might not understand. Either way, it was a good read.

Ripper was such a great book. It was a mystery involving the well known killer Jack the Ripper. In this book Carver an orphan boy his whole life one day discovers a letter he believes is from his father. Carver is very much interested in becoming a detective and when he gets adopted by a famous detective Carver is given his chance to work on his own case involving the identity of his father. As the book goes along murders are happening in New York City and Carver thinks that it is the real Jack Ripper. It was so good and I could not put it down.

Fourteen year old Carver Young has never known anything other than the orphanage. In 1895 New York, that’s all he really needs. He spends his time reading detective stories and trying to solve mysteries around his fellow orphans, dreaming of the day when he turns eighteen and can make his own way. But one day it all changes; the orphanage is closing and he has to find someone to adopt him. Cue the eccentric Mr. Hawking, a retired Pinkerton’s agent who might not be as retired as he claims. He adopts Carver and begins to teach him how to be a private detective, even showing him the semi-secret organization called the New Pinkertons. They agree to train Carver, even helping him solve the biggest mystery of his life- who his father was. But as things progress, he begins to wonder if things are exactly as they seem. Murders are starting to occur with alarming frequency, looking strangely similar to the legendary ”Ripper” killings in London just a few years before. Young and Hawking begin to investigate, tangling with the killer, running into Teddy Roosevelt and learning to respect each other. As Carver goes on with the case, he starts to realize he has a connection to the killer‚ And he may not want to know how or why.   This novel was a quick read, but by no means simple. There was a depth of character, twists, turns, genuine mystery and a dash of steampunk thrown in for good measure. It will keep the reader engaged and cheering for the hero through every dark alley, fist fight, suspenseful clue and humorous piece of dialogue. A definite recommendation for anyone who loves mystery, a spunky protagonist, or a book that will continue to surprise you. This  novel is one that you can’t rip your attention away from.

This Dark Endeavor: the Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein
Simon and Schuster    2011

The cover for this book was very compelling and mysterious, a good choice for this novel.     Before Mary Shelley’s immortal classic Frankenstein, before the monster, before the well-known tale of horror and suspense, Victor Frankenstein was a simple fifteen year old boy, always getting into one adventure or another. One of those adventures involves finding a secret library full of outlawed alchemy books in his home. Victor’s father, the province magistrate himself, had banned these books, and forbade Victor from reading them. But when Victor’s beloved twin Konrad falls ill, the doctors are not able to cure him. Victor revisits the library, to find a book describing an elixir of life; an exotic mixture promising health to any who drinks it. Assisted by his beautiful ‘cousin’ Elizabeth, his best friend Henry, a mysterious alchemist and a trained lynx, Victor makes up his mind to create this elixir, no matter how hard the ingredients are to find, or that practicing alchemy is illegal. He will cure his brother, regardless of how many laws of nature he has to break; even if he has to give his own life. This engrossing novel has a little something for everyone, with action, humor, danger, romance, intrigue, raw emotions, and twists that will keep you hooked until the last page. Yet another masterpiece from Kenneth Oppel.

Mitch True has wanted to be a reporter since he was six and watched "All the King's Men" and his ambition has made him the best writer at his school newspaper. Now that it's his senior year he expects to finally receive his rightful place as editor but instead he is delegated to the sports section by the new editor who won by mere popularity. Mitch is informed at the beginning of the year that he can only write what the coaches want but he can't help from noticing that something fishy is happening on the football team. Why is the football coach keeping the new player on the bench when he's one of the best high school players Mitch has ever seen? What seemed like just another sports book quickly turns into an investigative novel where the surprising corruption behind high school football is revealed. With characters that you can't help but care about and a plot resembling a thriller movie I only put this book down with extreme reluctance and picked it up again as soon as possible. It has the great advantage of being able to be read by most teen audiences. Those who love sport books, those who like mysteries, those who like realistic fiction, possibly even reluctant readers, and it is completely appropriate for all age groups including middle school.

Kill Me Softly
2012

This book was an amazing twist on fairy tales. The book is about a young girl trying to discover who she truly is and find her parents graves in the town where she was born. In the process, she discovers the towns secret and that her new friends are all cursed with a fate and destiny already determined. She also finds out that she is cursed as well. Can she find her parents graves,or more likely, love when she tries to escape her own fate? Find out in this tale of curses, destiny, and love. Absulutly wonderful and I recomend to everyone. Though it's rather easy to figure out what's going on in most parts, Cross keeps you guessing and in suspence till the end.

The story of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots is told in a way only Carolyn Meyer can do.  Though many historical fiction books I‚Äôve read focus on the fighting and battles, The Young Royals series gives me an insight in to the life of European life, both on the high end and on the low end, as most monarchs at the time experienced both sides of life in the 1500's.  I love this book just as I have loved the rest of the series before it.  I sincerely hope that Meyer adds another installment to this series; I can't wait to read more of her books.

HARPERTEEN 2012

I loved this book. Mel's charcter is so beliveable and shes so smart. The book kept me hooked with all the twists and turns, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys vampire novels. I thought Kit and Camille were funny, I thought Francis was kind of full of himself, but a good charcter. I didn't really like Cathy because she kept going on about how evil vampires are, even when her Dad is in possible danger. I laughed at some of the things Mel said, all in all a very good story with amazing charcters.

Cammie Bliss is a stalker. No joke. When she developes a crush on Toby she starts "Observing him," in unimaginable ways. This includes stalking him, going through his trash, befriending him, and when he catches her, the drama starts. I recommend this book because it is funny and realistic in a creepy way. Read! I promise you wil enjoy this book. Unless you are a guy, then you might not.

I loved this book to point where I couldn't put it down and I ended up finishing it in one day. I love how raw the book is and the emotions from the characters. They're real emotions and I love how the author doesn't try to just provide a happy ending, but a real ending where Travis is working on his problems, rather than his problems just going away. Reading this book broke my heart for Travis as well as Charlie and a book that can stir up emotions is a pretty good read.

My Book of Life by Angel by Martine Leavitt

My Book of Life by Angel
Farrar Straus Giroux Books for Young Readers 2012

My Book of Life by Angel is a horible book that has ruined my life! This book is about prostitution, and although it has a good message and good ending, this book has made me seen stuff in my head I did not want to see. An example passage would be "But Call says I'm supposed to be innocent,| clean baby-girl skin| no makeup| so dates can paste on any face they want| and i can tell new dates it's my first time| and I am thirteen even though I am sixteen,| Sixteen doesn't make as much money| as thirteen.| Serena was ninteen,| told dates she was sixteen,| told me she was a hundred down there." That passage was probably one of the worst, other than describing what "dates" made her do. Then there was the part of Call, the pimp, found an eleven-year old girl and made her work. It does have a good message but it is very grafic, sad, and has some majorly gross parts.

The Obsidian Blade
Candlewick Press 2012

The concept behind this book was incredible but didn't flow well. Some parts seemed too slow and others too fast. The protagonist's personality and depth felt flat, like a painting next to a sculpture. I felt like I got half a book; the plot is still building. The author seems to not understand the concept of a series. It is NOT when you take a book and chop it into thirds for more money. Take the sequel and sew it to this book before you read it if you want a full story.

Shatter Me is about a girl who can kill someone by just touching them. She is put in isolation for about three years till one day she gets a cell mate named Adam. slowly things come into place the reason she was locked up alone for so long is because the people trying to rule the world want to use her a weapon. this is an amazing book if you like a action and romantic book mixed together but the end seemed rushed like she wanted to finish the book as soon as she could. Is there a 2nd book?
