Bitter Melon by Cara Chow

Bitter Melon
Egmont USA    2011

The story begins with a young abused girl named Frances. Although her mother is very strict and physically abusive, she still tries to be a normal person in a normal high school. When she is accidentally enrolled in speech, she finds out that it's one of her strong points and tries to stay two weeks in speech, before the deadline comes to enlist in her original class, Calculus. She is afraid of her mom finding out about her speech class, but she comes around to the fact and misses the deadline by a day. She desperately attempts to hide her secret class but eventually her mom finds out. This book is fantastic because it shows how Frances changes from the beginning to the end of the book. The point of view in the book really emphasizes the point of the story. A young woman overcoming her childhood and sprouting into the start of the rest of her life.

Rating: 5 Hard to imagine a better book
